Kincumber is the Coast's calm side

Not every Central Coast holiday needs to start with sand in the car. Kincumber sits on the Kincumber Broadwater, the sheltered water tucked in behind the surf beaches, and it still works like a proper village. There's a real bakery, a butcher, a grocer and a pub that's been pouring since 1976.

Behind the village rises Kincumba Mountain, seven hundred hectares of bushland with rainforest gullies, lookouts and eleven walking trails, from twenty minute strolls to two hour treks. The Kanning Walk passes Aboriginal axe grinding grooves that have been there far longer than any of us. Down on the water, free boat ramps at Carrak Road and Hawke Street open up the whole Broadwater for kayaks and tinnies.

The surf is never far. Avoca Beach and MacMasters Beach are both about ten minutes by car, so you can do flags and boards all morning and still be back for a quiet afternoon on the water. Kincumber is where you stay when you want the beaches without sleeping in the middle of them.

Fill your days

Bush walks - lookouts

Kincumba Mountain

Eleven trails through rainforest and ridgeline, with Colin Watters Lookout at the top and a mud brick kiosk that's been there since 1985. The family friendly Kanning Walk loops past Aboriginal axe grinding grooves.

Boats - calm water

Out on the Broadwater

Launch free from Carrak Road or Hawke Street and you've got flat, sheltered water in every direction. Kayak at dawn, fish through the morning, swim off the boat by noon.

Old school - Brisbane Water

The Davistown ferry

From the wharves at neighbouring Davistown, Central Coast Ferries potters across Brisbane Water to Woy Woy seven days a week. Stand on the wharf, flag it down, and see the Coast the way it used to move.

Avoca - MacMasters

The beach run

Ten minutes east to Avoca's point break, or ten minutes south to the quiet sand at MacMasters. Pick a beach each morning and come home to dinner at the pub.

Eat & drink

The village does the basics properly, which is exactly what you want after a beach day. There's even a brewery tucked away in the industrial units.
