Wamberal is Terrigal without the fuss

One unbroken stretch of sand runs from Terrigal's esplanade all the way to the Forresters headland, and most of it is Wamberal. Nearly four kilometres of beach backed by dunes and beach houses, long enough that even a January Saturday leaves you plenty of room to yourself.

Behind the beach sits Wamberal Lagoon and its 139 hectare nature reserve, one of the best surviving pockets of coastal lagoon and dune country on the Coast. Sea eagles work the shoreline, migratory waders arrive each spring, and when the lagoon entrance is closed the shallow water is about as safe as it gets for small kids. The Spoon Bay track winds through the reserve to a small, quiet cove at the northern end.

Terrigal is a stroll down the sand, with an off leash dog stretch on the way. But you don't actually have to leave the suburb to eat well. Wamberal has a woodfired pizzeria, a beachside cafe by the surf club, and one of the Coast's most talked about little restaurants, all within a few streets.

Fill your days

Surf - space

Wamberal Beach

Long open banks favoured by surfers at the central and northern ends, with flagged swimming at Dover Road in season. The main draw is simple: room. Walk five minutes and the crowd is gone.

Bush track - birdlife

Wamberal Lagoon Nature Reserve

Take the Spoon Bay track through dunes and pockets of littoral rainforest to a secluded cove under the Forresters headland. Bring binoculars, the lagoon pulls in everything from egrets to sea eagles. No dogs in the reserve.

Beach walk - coffee

Walk the sand to Terrigal

Head south along the beach to Terrigal, do the boardwalk around the rock platform and climb The Skillion for the view. Dogs run off leash on the stretch between the two beaches.

Calm water - kids

Paddle the lagoon

When the entrance is closed the lagoon is flat, shallow and sheltered, ideal for a slow kayak or a first paddle. Early morning, glassy water, birds everywhere.

Eat & drink

For a quiet beach suburb, Wamberal punches well above its weight at dinner time. And Terrigal's whole strip is five minutes down the road when you want the full parade.
